BEAUTY DISLIKES BEING CAPTIVE TO PERFECTION.

-THE UNKNOWN CRAFTSMAN

Whoever you are, go out into the evening,
leaving your room, of which you know
each bit;
your house is the last before the infinite,
whoever you are.
Then with your eyes that wearily
scarce lift themselves from the worn-out door-stone
slowly you raise a shadowy black tree
and fix it on the sky : slender, alone.
And you have made the world (and it shall grow and ripen as a word, unspoken, still)
When you have grasped its meaning with your will, then tenderly your eyes will let it go...

Rilke

In his essay on painting, Roger de Piles remarked that the word is but the
sign of the thing...Painting, which most vividly represents reality, shakes and penetrates the heart more powerfully than discourse. Finally it is the essence of painting to speak with things, as it is the essence of poetry to paint with words.

I would be at great pains to say where is the painting I am looking at. For I do not look at it as I do at a thing: I do not fix it in its place. My gaze wonders in it as in the halos of Being. It is more accurate to say that I see according to it, or with it, than that I see it.
